The Southern Africa Litigation Centre is supporting a constitutional petition in Kenya, for Coalition Action for Preventive Mental Health in Kenya (CAMPHK) as an interested party challenging section 226 of the penal code, which makes it a misdemeanour offence to attempt to commit suicide. The case seeks to highlight attempted suicide as an issue that is best addressed through the public health system, rather than through criminal justice systems.
The matter is being heard in the Nairobi High Court. Hearings took place in May and August 2023.
