In Memoriam
Mark Peters
Mark Peters joined SALC as a board member in July 2022 and was the board chairperson until he passed away on 4 August 2025. Mark had a long and distinguished career as a business school academic, focusing on strategy and marketing and, at the time of his passing, was working as an independent strategy facilitator in a wide range of industries. SALC benefitted immensely from his extensive expertise in organisational governance and strategy and finance as a leading member of the Audit and General Purpose Committee on the board.
Sternford Moyo
Sternford Moyo, an experienced human rights lawyer, was instrumental in guiding SALC’s strategy since its inception and served as a board member from 2015 to February 2024. He once served as the president of the SADC Lawyers’ Association and was the first African president of the International Bar Association. Sternford passed away on 5 July 2024.
Thulani Rudolf Maseko
On 21 January 2023, Thulani Maseko was assassinated. Thulani was a recognised human rights lawyer, SALC colleague and activist, and his death reverberated throughout Africa. In 2009, Thulani was arrested and charged under the Swaziland Suppression of Terrorism Act. Thulani and five others including Mario Masuku (a human rights activist) challenged provisions of sedition and terrorism laws. This was the time when there were growing demands for democratic reform in Swaziland. SALC honoured Mario and Thulani through a documentary on the fight for democracy in Eswatini, which won the Best Social Impact Award at the African Human Rights Film Festival in 2022.
