MALAWI: UNITED NATIONS WORKING GROUP ON ARBITRARY DETENTION

By 13 December 2010February 22nd, 2019Criminal Justice1 min read

SALC will be submitting four cases to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) arguing that the applicants’ right to liberty and due process were violated. The applicants are four Malawian men between the ages of 13 and 27.  They were arrested, beaten, held in small, overcrowded cells, and not informed of their rights or provided legal representation. The most troubling of these relates to a juvenile detained in 2006 for an offence committed in 2001, when he was apparently 11 years old.

SALC is working with the Centre for Human Rights, Education, Advice and Assistance (CHREAA) in preparing the submissions.
