Zimbabwe: Human rights and media lawyer arrested

Mordecai Mahlangu, a prominent human rights and media lawyer was on 02 November 2009 arrested for allegedly writing a letter to Attorney General (AG) Johannes Tomana.  
The letter was written in protest of a subpoena that was issued directing Peter Hitschmann, to testify in Deputy Agriculture Minister Designate and Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Treasurer-General Roy Bennett’s trial despite the fact that Hitschmann’s statements were extracted through torture. Mahlangu is allegedly being charged with obstructing the course of justice.
Mahlangu, who is a senior legal practitioner with Gill, Godlonton & Gerrans was arrested by Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID)’s Law and Order Section who were led by Detective Inspector Henry Dowa. He was arrested and detained overnight at the Harare police station.
