UN says human rights violations could spread HIV/AIDS

Manila - The World Health Organization (WHO) warned Tuesday that human rights violations, compounded by limited or no access to health services, could significantly contribute to the spread of HIV/AIDS in Asia. The WHO's regional office in Manila urged countries to take drastic measures to protect the human rights of high-risk groups to ensure they have access to information and services needed for their protection, care and treatment.

ICC: UN General Assembly endorses Goldstone report

On Thursday, November 5th, Member States at the United Nations adopted a resolution supporting the main recommendations of the Goldstone report. The report, which had already been approved by the UN Human Rights Council last October, raises accusations of war crimes committed in Gaza during the Israeli assault last winter.

ICC: Al-Bashir cancels Turkey trip as OIC summit opens

PRESIDENT Omar al-Bashir of Sudan, indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC), has pulled out of an Islamic summit in Istanbul after the Turkish government had previously welcomed his attendance and said that he would not be arrested. He was to attend the summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) which began yesterday.

On 3 April 2009, the President of the Human Rights Council established an international independent Fact Finding Mission with the mandate “to investigate all violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law that might have been committed at any time in the context of the military operations that were conducted in Gaza during the period from 27 December 2008 and 18 January 2009, whether before, during or after.”
