Partnership with CHREAA
23rd November 2000, 12:00 pm

SALC in conjunction with CHREAA are currently preparing for two separate training courses with the police and the magistrates in Malawi. SALC will be conducting training on the rights of detained persons with a particular focus on the rights of vulnerable groups (children, women, refugees and the mentally handicapped.)

SALC is also assisting CHREAA in the preparation of submissions to the Malawi Law Commission on the review of the Witchcraft Act. At present witchcraft is not recognized under the law, some groups are arguing that it should be recognized by law. CHREAA and SALC will be arguing that the law as it stands is acceptable although there is a need for a public advocacy campaign to educate the communities and magistrates as to the effect of the law. CHREAA and SALC will also address the criminal justice issues specifically the plight of numerous people who are imprisoned for ‘witchcraft’ despite it not being an offence. The review will provide an opportunity for CHREAA and SALC to address some of the key issues that undermine the criminal justice system in Malawi.

Finally SALC are assisting CHREAA in the preparation of an application for Observer Status at the African Commission.
