The cases of Justice Paradza of Zimbabwe and Justice Hlophe of South Africa bear a striking resemblance. Both judges are accused of trying to influence their judicial colleagues to decide matters in favour of certain persons-Justice Paradza in favour of his business partner, while Justice Hlophe is accused of trying to get a decision in favour of the current President of South Africa who was facing corruption and fraud charges. Both allegations lie at the heart of judicial ethics. In both instances, only a full and transparent investigation will rescue the reputation of the judiciary. Even if the political climate in Zimbabwe changes for the better, uncomfortable questions still have to be answered.
