In Re Butao and Others v State (State v Officer in Charge of Mwanza Police and Others)
2nd September 2011, 12:00 pm
On March 10, 2011.  11 women sued the Government of Malawi for subjecting them to a mandatory HIV test while in police custody and in some of the cases disclosing their HIV status in open court. The women argue that this violated their constitutional rights to privacy and liberty of a person, to non-discrimination, to freedom from cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment and to dignity of the person. The applicants filed founding papers at the High Court. Government has yet to respond.
