Namibia: Coerced Sterilization of HIV Positive Women
2009
SALC with the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW) and the Legal Assistance Centre (LAC) are suing the Namibian Government for the coerced sterilization of at least fifteen HIV positive women at public hospitals in Namibia. Three of the cases are expected to go to trial on 20 October 2009. In the legal challenge we are alleging violations of the women's constitutional rights to dignity, be free from cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, found a family and be free from discrimination. We are asking for damages for pain and suffering and for the discrimination they suffered.
